About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain runner, also written Na'in, from central Iran, 256 x 79 cm (8'5" x 2'7"), a city long associated with some of the finest weaving in Persia. Nain is graded by fineness in "La" steps, and pieces at the higher grades, worked with silk over wool, are among the most sought after of all Persian rugs.

What you see

The ground is a soft ivory, covered edge to edge in a fine lattice of steel blue and slate grey-blue diamonds, rather than gathered around a central medallion. Within each diamond sits a small rosette with serrated leaves, drawn in navy outline, and the pattern repeats without pause along the full length of the runner, giving it a steady, unbroken rhythm. Here and there a rosette centre carries a touch of dark red, a quiet warm note against the cool palette. A narrow border in matching beige and steel blue carries a repeating palmette vine, echoing the field rather than framing it with contrast.

How it was made

That evenness is a matter of drawing and knot count together. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, the weaver had knots fine enough to set out a lattice this small without it blurring into a wash of colour, and the silk carried through the wool pile is part of what made knots that fine possible, since silk spins thinner than wool and holds a sharper line on a curve. Kept low, at 8 mm, the pile lets that fine drawing sit close to the surface rather than settle into depth, so the lattice reads clearly even from across a room.

At home

This runner suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed. Its ivory ground lifts a corridor with little daylight, and the steel-blue lattice holds its own against dark skirting without competing for attention. The pile is fine and dense underfoot, sturdy enough for everyday use. Catch it in low light and the silk highlights glint along the rosettes as you pass.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 256 × 79 cm (2.02 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 2.02 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
