About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, also written Na'in, the fine city weave from central Iran, in a size of 298 x 199 cm (9'9" x 6'6"). Nain is graded by its "La" number, the finer weaves carrying the lower figure, and the type is best known for pale ivory-and-blue grounds worked with silk. This piece keeps the silk but turns the ground dark, a navy field where a Nain is usually pale.
What you see
The first impression is a deep navy ground almost entirely covered by pale ivory scrollwork, the floral vine running edge to edge with barely a patch of bare ground showing. There is no medallion to anchor the eye; instead palmettes and rosettes repeat across the whole field as one continuous pattern. A wide ivory border, filled with the same scrolling vine, closes the design, held in by a thin blue-grey guard stripe, with small notes of tan and brick red warming the scrollwork throughout.
How it was made
The pile is wool with silk worked through it; silk spins thinner than wool and takes a sharper edge, and that is what gives every scroll and rosette its crisp, unblurred outline against the dark ground. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp, the weaver had enough knots to fill the field this completely, a density that took months to complete. The pile is kept short, at 12 mm, so the drawing stays sharp rather than soft.
At home
At just under three metres by two, this suits a dining table or a living room seating group. The navy ground holds its own against dark furniture and warms a pale floor, while the ivory scrollwork lifts a room with little daylight. Underfoot the pile is fine, short and firm, dense enough for daily use, and as light crosses it the silk catches differently with each pass, so the pattern never sits quite still.
