About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain runner from central Iran, 310 x 80 cm (10'2" x 2'8"), made in the wool-and-silk workshops that have given Nain its name for fine, precise weaving since the early twentieth century. The town's rugs are graded by "La" number, the finer knotting carrying the lower figure, and are usually recognised by their ivory-and-blue palette and their exactness of drawing. This piece keeps that palette so pale and so close in tone that the drawing all but disappears into the ground, which is unusual even for a design normally prized for its restraint.
What you see
The field is a cream-white ivory, and at first glance it reads as almost plain. Only on closer look does the pattern surface: a dense, all-over Mahi repeat of floral sprays and vine tracery, in soft blue-grey and slate blue with touches of dusty pink, running edge to edge with no medallion to anchor it. The border follows the same logic, a narrow ivory band carrying matching blue-grey and pink florals, set only a shade darker than the field, so the frame holds the design rather than announcing it. Across the surface a low, even pile carries a faint sheen that gathers along the motif outlines, giving the tone-on-tone pattern its only real definition.
How it was made
That sheen is silk, worked into a wool pile at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, on a cotton warp, with the pile clipped to 12 millimetres. Silk takes a finer thread than wool, so wherever it appears the outline sharpens slightly against the surrounding wool, which is how the vine and florals hold their shape even at this pale, restrained colouring. A density in this range, on a runner this size, is months of steady knotting rather than weeks, and it is that fineness which lets such a quiet palette still carry a full Mahi pattern instead of flattening into nothing.

A runner this size belongs in a hallway or along a landing, or beside a bed where a long, narrow piece is wanted underfoot rather than a square one. The ivory ground lifts a hallway with little daylight, and holds its own without competing against darker doors or furniture either side of it. Underfoot it is dense, smooth and firmly woven, built for the daily walking a hallway asks of a rug rather than for a room that is merely looked at. Move a lamp or the daylight across it and the silk catches along the vine outlines, so the pattern seems to come forward and settle back as the light shifts through the day.
