About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain, hand-knotted in the city workshops of central Iran, 293 x 223 cm (9'7" x 7'4"). Nain built its reputation in the twentieth century on precision rather than age, and on one signature trick: wool pile lifted with fine threads of silk. The finer the weave, the lower the workshop's "La" grading runs, and pieces at this level sit among the most sought after Persian city rugs made today.
What you see
The field is a deep navy, unusual ground for a design that Nain more often sets in ivory. Across it runs a dense floral scroll, palmettes and vine work carried in the same ivory the border uses, so that when the eye reaches the central star medallion it does not read as something laid on top of the field but as the field's own pattern gathering itself into one bright form at the centre. A wide cream and tan border holds the whole composition, its scrollwork picked out in soft blue-grey and camel, and against the navy it gives the rug real contrast without ever tipping into busyness.
How it was made
That balance comes from the knotting itself. At 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, this is work measured in months rather than weeks, and it is what allows outlines this crisp on a pattern this dense. The pile mixes wool with silk, and because silk spins so much finer than wool it lets the weaver knot at a tighter count exactly where the drawing needs it, along the medallion's edge and the finest vine tendrils. A cotton warp keeps the whole structure stable underneath, and a 12mm pile leaves a smooth, even surface with a light sheen where the silk catches.
At home
At this size the rug is built for a living room or dining room, under a seating group or a table where its full field can be seen at once. The navy holds its ground against dark wood or dark upholstery, and on a pale floor it becomes the room's anchor rather than disappearing into it. The pile is dense and firm underfoot, made for a room that gets used rather than one kept for best. What stays with you is the way daylight moves across it through the day, catching the silk in the scrollwork and the medallion first, so the pattern never sits quite still.
