About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain runner from central Iran, 249 x 79 cm (8'2" x 2'7"), from a city long recognised for some of the most refined workshop weaving in Persia. Nain rugs are usually drawn around a floral medallion in ivory and blue; this one spreads its scrollwork evenly along the whole length instead, with nothing at the centre demanding attention.

What you see

A deep navy field carries dense ivory scrollwork, serrated leaves and palmettes repeating steadily from end to end, so the eye travels along the runner rather than settling on one point. Look closely near the middle and a faint rosette can just be made out, so lightly drawn that it barely reads as a medallion at all. The wide ivory border, worked in the same flowing vine, sits between narrower grey-blue guard stripes set with small rosettes touched in burgundy and steel blue.

How it was made

That evenness comes directly from the knotting. At between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, the weaver could hold each leaf and palmette to a consistent width across the full 249 centimetres, so no single motif breaks the rhythm or pulls the eye off course. The pile is wool threaded with silk, and silk spins far finer than wool, which lets those highlighted outlines sit crisp against the navy ground instead of softening into it. A pile height of just 12 millimetres keeps that drawing sharp both underfoot and to the eye.

At home

A runner of this length belongs in a hallway or along a landing, somewhere a pattern is met in passing rather than taken in all at once. The navy ground holds its own on stone or pale wood, and the ivory scrollwork lifts a corridor that sees little daylight. Underfoot the weave is dense and firm, made for the ordinary comings and goings of a hallway rather than for careful stepping. Walk its length as the light changes through the day, and the silk in the scrollwork catches and lets go in turn, so the pattern seems to move quietly alongside you.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 249 × 79 cm (1.97 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 1.97 m² that is roughly 870,000 to 980,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
