About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, a city-workshop rug from the small weaving town of that name in central Iran, sized 287 x 198 cm (9'5" x 6'6"). Nain is known above all for its fineness — graded in "La" numbers, the lower the number the tighter the knot — and for wool grounds lifted with silk. Here that reputation for luxury is kept unusually quiet.
What you see
The ground is an even ivory, warmed by a sandy undertone rather than pure white. A central medallion rises from it in steel blue-grey, its floral vines drawn in one fine, continuous line, and the same medallion recurs, scaled down, in each corner, so the field reads as a single balanced composition rather than a centre set against empty ground. Scattered rosettes in a muted brick red are the only warmth in an otherwise cool palette. The border, close in tone to the field, carries the same vine in a narrower band, holding the design in rather than framing it loudly.
How it was made
Nain rugs are knotted to a fixed drawing, not from memory, and this one carries 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — a density reachable only because the pile is fine wool lifted with silk, a fibre that takes a far tighter knot than wool alone. That fineness is what lets the vine run as one continuous line instead of breaking into steps, and why the outlines look drawn rather than woven. An 8 mm pile, clipped close, keeps every curve sharp underfoot as well as to the eye.
At home
At just under three metres by two, this suits a living or dining room, large enough to sit under a table and chairs or to anchor a seating group. The ivory ground lifts a room with little natural light, while the steel-blue tracery holds its own against darker wood furniture without competing for attention. Underfoot the pile is fine, dense and firm, a rug built for daily use rather than for keeping aside. As the light moves across the room through the day, the silk catches it in turn, and the medallion never quite looks the same twice.
