Where it comes from
This is a Nain, the fine city-woven rug of central Iran, also written Na'in, graded by its "La" number — here a 6La, among the closest weaves the town produces — 234 x 148 cm (7'8" x 4'10"). Nain is known for wool pile lifted with silk highlights, almost always set on an ivory ground; this piece keeps the fineness and the silk, and turns the ground itself to navy.
What you see
The first impression is depth: a near-midnight field barely visible beneath a fine tracery of cream and camel-tan florals, the Mahi lattice repeating without a break from edge to edge. Down the centre that density gathers into three pale medallions, a larger one at the middle flanked by two smaller diamond shapes, giving the field a quiet vertical rhythm rather than one fixed point. Rust-red and dusty green sit low among the flowers, barely raising their voice against the navy. A wide ivory border, filled with floral cartouches and rosettes and edged with a thin powder-blue guard stripe, closes the field and returns the eye to daylight.
How it was made
This precision comes from the knotting itself. At 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre, a Nain 6La sits among the finest weaving Persia produces, and it is silk that makes it possible: spun far thinner than wool, it lets the weaver turn a knot where wool alone would blur into a smudge. That is what keeps the cream tracery legible against the navy rather than dissolving into it, and why a pile kept to 6 mm reads as drawing rather than texture. On a steady cotton warp, the lattice holds its edge across the whole field rather than softening towards the border.

At 234 x 148 cm this is a rug for a room where you sit close to it — a study, a reading corner, in front of a sofa rather than under a full dining table. The navy ground holds its own against dark wood or leather, and against a pale floor it reads almost as inlay, the cream medallions floating clear above it. Underfoot the pile is dense and fine, with a raised sheen where the silk sits in the flowers, firm enough for a room in daily use without asking to be treated carefully. Move a lamp across it in the evening and the silk catches first in the medallions, then along the lattice, so the same rug looks different by the hour and never quite settles.
