About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain rug from central Iran, 297 x 206 cm (9'9" x 6'9"), from a town whose name has become shorthand for fine, precise workshop weaving. Nain rugs are drawn to a cartoon rather than worked from memory, and this is what that discipline produces: a pattern set out with such evenness that the eye finds no single dramatic point, only a field carried through in full.
What you see
The field is ivory, and across it runs a dense, symmetrical scroll of navy floral vine, the classic Mahi drawing repeated without a break and without a centre. There is no medallion here to gather the eye; the pattern simply continues, corner to corner, each motif answering the last with almost no variation in tone. A broad camel border, patterned in the same navy floral scrollwork, closes the field on all sides, taking up close to a fifth of the width and giving the ivory ground something firm to sit against.
How it was made
That evenness is a matter of knotting as much as drawing. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, the weaver was working to a fineness that leaves little room for the pattern to drift, and the wool pile is lifted with silk, which spins far thinner than wool and lets the finest outlines stay crisp rather than blur at the edge. It is this combination, fine knot and silk highlight, that gives the vine its light sheen and its unbroken regularity across nearly three square metres of ivory ground, all hand-knotted on a cotton warp over what would have been a long stretch of steady, careful work.
At home
A rug this size, and this composed, suits a dining table or a seating group in a living or dining room, somewhere it can be seen whole rather than caught in passing. The ivory ground will lift a room with darker floors or furniture, while the navy and camel keep it from ever looking pale or washed out. Underfoot the pile is fine and shallow, at eight millimetres, smooth rather than deep, and it wants a room that is lived in gently rather than one that takes heavy daily traffic. Sit with it for an evening and the silk will catch the light differently as the sun crosses it, the vine seeming to shift and settle without the pattern ever losing its poise.
