About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain runner, 335 x 87 cm (11'0" x 2'10"), from the workshops of central Iran that have, in little more than a century, become shorthand for the finest Persian weaving. Nain rugs are graded by fineness, in "La" steps, and are best known for a pale ivory-and-blue palette and finely drawn floral work. This piece keeps the fine drawing but sets it on a ground you rarely see in a Nain: a true midnight navy.

What you see

The first impression is of ivory florals floating on that dark field, cool and crisp rather than soft. The pattern runs edge to edge with no medallion to anchor it, a dense repeat of diamond lattice, rosettes and serrated leaves in the Mahi style, with small touches of dusty rose and sage worked into the vine. A wide cream border closes the field, and inside it a narrower band of pale sky-blue florals repeats the vine motif at smaller scale, holding the whole runner together.

How it was made

Fineness on a Nain is a matter of knot count, and this one carries 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, a density that comes only from months of steady work at the loom. The pile is wool with silk worked through the ivory motifs, and silk spins far finer than wool, which is what lets the florals keep their crisp edge at this scale. A cotton warp keeps the structure stable under a low pile of 12 mm, finished tight and even, so the drawing reads clearly rather than blurring into the ground.

At home

A runner of this length belongs in a hallway or along a landing, and the navy ground is an advantage in a passage with little daylight: it does not vanish into shadow the way a pale ground can, and the ivory vine keeps catching what light there is. Underfoot it is dense, smooth and low, built to take daily footsteps rather than to be kept for best. Walk past it morning and evening and the silk highlights will shift with the light each time, never quite the same runner twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 335 × 87 cm (2.91 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 2.91 m² that is roughly 1.3 to 1.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
