About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, also written Na'in, from the city of that name in the centre of Iran, woven to the fine 6La grade — the lower the number, the tighter the knotting. Nain built its reputation on flowing arabesques and a single floral medallion in ivory and blue. This piece, at 238 x 164 cm (7'10" x 5'5"), does something else with that vocabulary.

What you see

The field is not one continuous pattern but a grid, cream and near-black panels set alternately like a checkerboard, each holding its own small motif. Some panels carry a paisley, others a dense floral spray, others a small diamond medallion, so the eye moves panel by panel rather than across one design. Muted brick-red, dusty pink, sky-blue and pale peach sit inside these motifs. A wide navy-black border, dense with an ivory floral scroll, closes the composition and holds the checkerboard field together.

How it was made

That precision comes from the materials as much as the drawing. Silk spins far finer than wool, and a pile of wool lifted with silk let the weaver draw a sharp edge around each panel, essential in a design built from compartments rather than flow. At 641,000 to 800,000 knots per square metre, the knotting holds that edge across eighteen small fields, the pile kept low at six millimetres so the drawing stays crisp. The piece is signed, a workshop's mark of this density.

At home

At 238 x 164 cm this suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room. The near-black panels hold their own against dark wood, while the ivory ground lifts a room with little daylight. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, ready for daily use. Sunlight crossing the panels catches the silk in one motif and not the next, so the grid never quite repeats itself.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 238 × 164 cm (3.90 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 641,000 to 800,000 knots per square metre; across 3.90 m² that is roughly 2.5 to 3.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
