About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain, 352 x 252 cm (11'7" x 8'3"), from the small city of Nain in central Iran, a weaving town that took to the craft relatively late yet became known within decades for the finest work in the country. Nain rugs are graded by "La" number, the finer counts taking the lower figure, and this is a 9La: fine, but built for confident colour rather than the palest end of the range. Where the town's rugs are almost always worked in ivory and blue, this one is knotted in a true, saturated red.
What you see
That red fills the field from edge to edge, dense with fine ivory and steel-blue floral scrollwork, serrated leaves and palmettes spreading outward with no single motif dominating. Look closer and a small rosette sits at the centre, all but absorbed into the surrounding vinework rather than announced as a medallion. The scrollwork carries touches of camel, navy and pale green in the leaf detail, and all of it is drawn with the same evenness right out to the edge. A wide ivory border, filled with matching floral vine and closed by a narrow blue-grey guard stripe, frames the field in clean light-on-dark contrast, taking up close to a fifth of the width.
How it was made
The wool pile carries fine silk highlights, and it is the silk that lets the drawing come through this sharp: silk takes a much thinner strand than wool, so the knotter can turn a tighter, more exact line without the motif blurring at its edges. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, that precision holds across the whole surface rather than fading toward the field. The pile is clipped to 8 mm and finished flat and even, which is why the outlines read as crisply as a drawing rather than softening into the wool the way a deeper pile would.
At home
At this size the rug is built for a dining table or a sofa group, in a dining room or a living room where there is space to see the whole field at once. Against dark furniture the red holds its ground rather than receding, and it will warm a pale floor considerably. Underfoot the pile is short, dense and firm, a surface that takes daily use comfortably rather than asking to be kept for best. Catch it in low light and the silk brings a faint sheen up through the scrollwork, the ivory lifting off the red as the light moves.
