Where it comes from
This is an Azerbaijan rug, 287 x 193 cm (9'5" x 6'4"), from the province of that name in northwestern Iran, one of the oldest carpet-weaving regions in the world, its textile production recorded by Arab geographers as early as the thirteenth century. The province holds seven distinct weaving districts, and its rugs are known above all for bold geometric medallions and angular arabesque borders set against deep, rich grounds.
What you see
The first impression here is warmth: a rust, brick-red field carrying a dense, all-over lattice pattern in navy, with no medallion to anchor the eye. This is the Mahi, or Herati, design - small rosettes linked by a fine diamond trellis, repeated edge to edge so the field reads as one continuous, busy weave rather than a composition built around a centre. Within the lattice, small notes of dusty rose, sage green and pale blue sit against the rust and navy. A wide navy border, filled with a floral vine and palmettes, closes the field firmly, framed by narrow cream guard stripes carrying small flowers of their own.
How it was made
A cotton warp keeps the structure stable, which lets the fine diamond trellis stay true and even across the full width of the field rather than drifting off line. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the density is high enough to draw each rosette and vine leaf cleanly - this is what gives the lattice its crisp, unbroken repeat rather than a softer, blurred one. The pile is hand-spun wool, cropped low at 12 mm, sitting flat and firm underfoot and carrying a light natural sheen rather than the deep lustre of a taller pile.
At home
A rug this size suits a dining table for six, or a seating group in a living room, wide enough to sit under chairs or hold a sofa's front legs without spilling onto bare floor. The rust field warms a pale or light-oak floor and holds its own beside dark wood or navy upholstery, without ever competing with the small touches of rose and sage inside the lattice.
