Where it comes from
The Azerbaijan province of north-west Iran has been weaving since the thirteenth century, and its output ranges from the refined city work of Tabriz to bolder village and tribal designs from the surrounding districts. This rug, at 267 x 165 cm (8'9" x 5'5"), belongs to that second tradition. It carries a formal medallion, but reads closer to the geometric boldness the region's villages are known for than to a workshop's studied symmetry.
What you see
The field is a warm, ziegelrot brick red, dense with small geometric motifs, hooked diamonds and stars packed close together. Down the centre runs a column of five octagon medallions, each with an ivory ground and a small stepped motif inside, set at even intervals rather than gathered into one dominant centre. Serrated, candelabra-like devices stand between them, keeping the eye moving down the length of the field. A wide navy border filled with a repeating hooked-leaf pattern frames the whole, held between narrower camel and rose guard stripes that lift the red without competing with it.
How it was made
This is a hand-knotted rug, its wool hand-spun before it ever reached the loom, which gives the pile a slightly irregular, matt surface rather than the flat sheen of machine-spun yarn. Knotted at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre onto a cotton warp, it holds the medallions' stepped outlines and the border's hooked leaves with clean, crisp edges despite the density being well short of the finest city work. The pile sits low, at 8 mm, giving a tight, even surface that has already worn in over its twenty to forty years without losing definition.
At home
A rug of this size suits a living room seating group, the column of medallions running past a sofa or along a low table rather than sitting under it. Against a pale floor the brick red brings real warmth into the room; against darker furniture it holds its own without being loud. The tight, low pile is firm underfoot and made for a room that gets used, not one kept for best. As daylight moves across it through the day, the ivory medallions catch the light in turn, so the rhythm down its length keeps quietly reasserting itself.
