Where it comes from
This is an Azerbaijan rug, 296 x 193 cm (9'9" x 6'4"), from the province of that name in north-western Iran, a carpet-weaving region already recorded by Arab geographers in the thirteenth century. Azerbaijan pieces are usually built around a bold geometric medallion and an angular arabesque border; this one sets the medallion aside for a pattern that covers the field edge to edge.
What you see
The field is a dense lattice of diamonds in brick red and navy, repeating without a break and without a centre — a Mahi, or "fish", pattern, drawn small and packed tightly across the surface, with cream rosettes marking each crossing point. Around this calm, two-colour field runs a wide navy-black border where the palette opens out: palmettes and rosettes in cream, rose-pink, mustard and sage green, linked by a meandering vine, taking up close to a fifth of the rug's width. Against the restraint of the field, the border reads as the richer half, the frame doing more of the work than the ground it surrounds.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, hand-knotted at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre and clipped to an even 12 millimetres. That density is what keeps the small diamonds of the Mahi repeat sharp rather than blurred, and it is what lets the border carry four or five colours in a band only a fifth of the rug's width without the palmettes losing their shape. Wool from this province is traditionally credited to locally copper-rich water, said to give it particular durability underfoot.
At home
At 296 x 193 cm this is a dining-room or living-room rug, sized to sit under a table and chairs or hold a sofa group without crowding it. The brick red warms a pale wooden floor and holds its own against dark furniture, while the navy border keeps the whole thing anchored rather than letting the red run loose. Underfoot the short, tightly clipped pile is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used rather than kept for best. In low light the field settles into a single quiet red; catch it in sun and the rosettes and border colours step forward, the calm centre and the richer frame taking turns to hold your eye.
