Where it comes from
This is a rug from Azerbaijan, the northwestern Iranian province noted for weaving since medieval times, measuring 292 x 198 cm (9'7" x 6'6"). The province has seven weaving districts, Tabriz among them, and its rugs are usually built around bold geometric medallions and angular borders on deep, saturated grounds. This piece keeps the deep ground but sets the medallion aside for a field covered, corner to corner, in one repeating motif.
What you see
The first impression is a warm rust red, covered edge to edge with small paisley shapes, the Boteh, in even diagonal rows that never break step. There is no medallion to draw the eye to a centre; the field simply continues until it meets a wide navy border of floral rosettes and angular arabesques, edged by narrow ivory and red guard stripes. Olive, dusty rose, mustard and slate blue appear in careful measure within the small repeating shapes, never enough to disturb the calm of the red ground.
How it was made
That calm is a matter of discipline as much as design. The wool is hand-spun and knotted onto a cotton foundation at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the rows held true across nearly three metres without drifting, which keeps this pattern looking so regular though every knot was tied by hand. Hand-spun wool takes dye a little unevenly, so the red reads as a warm, textured ground rather than flat colour, and an 8 millimetre pile gives it depth enough to hold that texture underfoot.

This rug suits a dining table with room for chairs, or a seating group in a living room, more than a small side space. The rust red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, while the navy border keeps it grounded. Dense, matte wool feels firm underfoot and is built for daily use, and sunlight crossing the diagonal Boteh rows through the day makes the pattern seem to shift its step without ever losing it.
