Where it comes from
A hand-knotted rug from Azerbaijan province in the north-west of Iran, 295 x 199 cm (9'8" x 6'6"). The province takes in seven separate weaving districts, Tabriz among them, and its rugs are known above all for bold geometric medallions, angular arabesque borders and deep, saturated grounds. This piece takes a quieter route through that tradition, choosing rust, cream and navy over the stronger reds and blues the type usually favours.
What you see
The first impression is warm rather than intense: a rust-brown field meeting a broad ivory ground, the two holding an easy balance rather than competing. Set into that ground is a large stepped octagonal medallion, its rust body built around a smaller navy octagon at the centre, with hooked pendant motifs reaching outward in dusty pink and sage. A wide navy border carries a floral vine around the whole composition, edged by a narrow steel-blue floral guard stripe that keeps the transition from field to border crisp rather than heavy.
How it was made
The wool here is hand-spun, and it is worth knowing what that means for the surface: spun by hand rather than machine, the strand keeps small natural irregularities that machine-spun yarn loses, and this is what gives the pile its matte, softly textured finish rather than a sharper, more uniform sheen. At a density of 161,000 to 200,000 knots per square metre, the drawing of the medallion stays clean and legible without ever tightening into the glassy precision of a city workshop piece, which suits a design built on calm rather than intricacy. The region's copper-bearing water is said to lend local wool its particular resilience, and twenty to forty years in, this piece already carries that out.
At home
At just under three metres by two, this is a rug for a dining room or a living room seating group, comfortably under a table or in front of a sofa. The rust and cream warm a pale floor without shouting, and hold their own against dark wood furniture rather than being lost to it. Underfoot the ten-millimetre pile is dense and firm, built for daily footsteps rather than careful preservation. As the light moves across the room through the day, the rust field takes on a slightly deeper, more copper cast toward evening, a small change that is easy to keep noticing.
