About This Azerbaijan

Where it comes from

This is a rug from Azerbaijan, also written Azarbayedjan, the northwest Persian province whose weavers have been recorded since the thirteenth century, working across seven sub-regions that range from village geometry to the refined workshops of Tabriz. Measuring 296 x 195 cm (9'9" x 6'5"), it carries the region's usual weight of colour and geometric confidence, though here without the medallion the type is normally built around.

What you see

The field opens in a warm brick red, closer to terracotta than to true red, and it runs edge to edge without a break. Instead of a medallion, a dense lattice of diamonds repeats across the whole ground in the Mahi, or Herati, pattern, each cell holding a small motif in teal, dusty pink, green or pale blue. The rhythm continues right to a wide navy border, drawn with angular arabesques, and is closed off by narrow cream and ivory guard stripes.

How it was made

This rug is hand-knotted from handspun wool, its fibre varying slightly in thickness, which gives the pile a faint, soft sheen rather than a uniform shine. A knot count of 201,000 to 250,000 per square metre keeps the diamond lattice sharp across the whole field, which matters more without a medallion to anchor the eye. A cotton warp holds the rug flat, and the local water, rich in copper, is credited with the wool's long-standing durability.

At home

This rug suits a dining table or a sofa group in a living room. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds against dark wood, while teal and pink accents keep the navy border alive. Dense and firm underfoot, it takes traffic evenly with no centre to wear thin, and evening light finds the lattice in small points across the room.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 296 × 195 cm (5.77 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 5.77 m² that is roughly 1.2 to 1.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
