Where it comes from
A rug from Azerbaijan province in the northwest of Iran, 250 x 161 cm (8'2" x 5'3"), sized for a seating area or a bedroom floor. The region has woven since the thirteenth century and covers seven distinct weaving districts, from tribal encampments to city workshops, but the pieces share a visual language: bold geometric medallions, angular borders, and grounds of deep, saturated colour. Here that medallion tradition is reworked as a row of five, laid horizontally rather than gathered into one centre.
What you see
The field reads almost black at first, a deep navy dense enough to lose its blue in low light. Across it run tight columns of stylised ram's-horn hooks, packed close and sharply drawn, the kind of pattern that could easily read as unbroken repeat. It does not, because five cream diamond medallions cross the middle in a single horizontal line, each edged with small stars and crosses in dove blue and ivory, giving the dark field a spine to read along. The border holds the same tension between density and order: a broad brick-red band of hooked rosettes, framed by a camel stripe and then a narrow dove-blue line that cuts hard against the near-black ground.
How it was made
The wool is handspun rather than machine-spun, so the yarn carries small natural variations in thickness that a mechanical thread never has, and it was knotted by hand at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. That is close enough to hold the hook motifs in sharp, clean outline, but loose enough that the piece still reads as made by hand rather than plotted by a machine. The wool is said to owe some of its resilience to the copper content of the region's water, and after twenty to forty years of use this rug still shows no thinning worth mentioning.
At home
In a living room it sits comfortably under a seating group, especially where the floor or furniture is pale, since the near-black ground gives the room a depth that a lighter rug cannot. The brick-red border holds its own against dark wood or leather rather than disappearing next to it. Underfoot the 8mm handspun pile is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used, not one that gets stepped around.
