About This Azerbaijan

Where it comes from

This is a Mahi, or Herati, medallion rug from Azerbaijan, the north-western Iranian province whose seven weaving districts include Tabriz, at 298 x 203 cm (9'9" x 6'8"). The province's textile production has been recorded since the thirteenth century, and its rugs are known for bold geometric medallions, angular arabesque borders and deep, saturated grounds — all present here.

What you see

The field is a dense navy lattice of the small Mahi fish motif, repeating edge to edge until it meets a large lobed medallion at the centre. That medallion is built in three nested layers — an ivory core, a navy ring, then a red outer lobing — so it reads as raised rather than flat against the field. Matching red spandrels fill the corners. A wide red border encloses it all, carrying a floral-and-diamond vine between narrower mustard and slate-blue guard stripes.

How it was made

Cotton warp, hand-spun wool pile, hand-knotted at 161,000 to 200,000 knots per square metre — dense enough for the weaver to set each of the medallion's three colour bands with a clean, separate edge, rather than letting them blur into one shape, which is exactly what gives the centre its unusual depth. The pile is clipped to 10 mm and carries a light sheen rather than a flat matte finish, so the three layers catch the light slightly differently from one another. This piece has had twenty to forty years to settle into that crispness.

At home

At just under three metres by two, it suits a dining table or a living room seating group rather than a smaller space. The navy ground holds its own against dark furniture and pale floors alike, while the red medallion keeps the room from feeling heavy. Underfoot the weave is dense and firm, made for daily use rather than for standing back and admiring. As daylight moves across it through the day, the medallion's three layers of colour shift in turn, so the depth built into the drawing keeps making itself felt.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 298 × 203 cm (6.05 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 161,000 to 200,000 knots per square metre; across 6.05 m² that is roughly 1.0 to 1.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
