About This Azerbaijan

Where it comes from

This is a rug from Azerbaijan province, also written Azarbayedjan, in north-west Iran, one of the oldest carpet-weaving regions, its textile trade documented since the thirteenth century. The province holds seven weaving districts and a shared language of bold geometric medallions on deep, saturated grounds. At 268 x 167 cm (8'9" x 5'6"), this piece follows that medallion tradition, though its ground is softer than most.

What you see

The field opens in a warm salmon pink, gentler than the heavy tones usually associated with the region. Across it sits a large diamond medallion in dark aubergine-black, its outline stepping rather than curving, filled densely with floral and geometric motifs in ivory, mustard-gold, sage green and slate-blue. Navy spandrels anchor the corners, and a wide navy border, carrying a meandering cream floral stripe, closes the design with a firmness the pink field alone would not have.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted onto a cotton warp at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, dense enough to carry the medallion's stepped edges and the small motifs without blurring them. Hand-spun yarn takes dye less evenly than machine-spun wool, and it is this that gives the salmon ground its soft, slightly broken warmth rather than a flat, uniform pink. Clipped to 8 mm, the pile stays sharp underfoot, and the region's copper-rich water is said to give its wool particular durability.

At home

This rug suits a seating area or a bedroom. The salmon ground warms a room with pale floors and holds its own against dark wood or navy upholstery. Underfoot the wool is dense and springy, firm enough for daily use. Through the day the pink shifts warmer and softer as the light moves, the medallion staying dark and steady at its centre.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 268 × 167 cm (4.48 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 4.48 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
