About This Azerbaijan
Where it comes from
This is an Azerbaijan rug, 262 x 167 cm (8'7" x 5'6"), from the northwestern Iranian province of that name, also written Azarbayedjan, one of the oldest carpet-weaving regions in the world. The province holds seven distinct weaving areas, ranging from village and tribal work to the city workshops of Tabriz, and its rugs are known for bold geometric medallions and angular borders set against deep, saturated grounds. Here there is no medallion at all.
What you see
The field is a warm brick red, crossed diagonally by a lattice of large hooked cross medallions in slate blue-grey, each outlined in cream, with small diamonds filling the gaps between them. Rather than settling on one centre, the pattern reads as a continuous chain, medallion linking to medallion across the whole field, with touches of forest green inside a few of the crosses. The design is closed by a stack of narrow borders — navy with small cream diamonds, a dusty rose stripe, and a wide ivory band carrying floral diamonds — making up about a fifth of the rug's width.
How it was made
The pile is handspun wool, knotted onto a cotton warp at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, a solid village density, enough to hold the sharp hooked outline of each medallion without blurring, though not as fine as the silk-based counts used for the most intricate city work. The pile is clipped low and even, at eight millimetres, which is why the pattern reads so crisply from a distance. Local water in the region is copper-rich, and is credited with giving wool of this kind its long wear.

At 262 x 167 cm this suits a living room seating group, or a bedroom, rather than a dining table. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a paler floor beside it. Underfoot it is dense and flat, built for daily use rather than careful preservation. Follow the diagonal chain of crosses across the field, and it never settles on a single point of rest.
