About This Azerbaijan

Where it comes from

This is an Azerbaijan carpet, 294 x 189 cm (9'8" x 6'2"), from the northwestern Iranian province where textile weaving was already recorded by Arab geographers in the thirteenth century. The province holds seven distinct weaving districts, ranging from tribal and village work to the refined city workshops of Tabriz, and its carpets share a common visual language: bold geometric medallions, angular arabesque borders, and deep, saturated grounds.

What you see

Here the ground is a muted petrol blue, and across it march five large star-shaped medallions, terracotta, ivory, salmon, ivory, terracotta, in a strict alternating sequence rather than one dominant central form. Small geometric motifs scatter through the field between them, filling the ground without competing with its rhythm. A wide terracotta border frames the whole, patterned with ivory and navy star rosettes that echo the same two-colour logic and hold the composition firmly in place.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, and clipped to a pile height of eight millimetres. Hand-spun yarn takes dye with small natural variations along its length, and that is what gives the petrol ground its depth without any banding or sheen across the surface. At this density the weaver was working from memory and eye rather than a fixed workshop cartoon, and it is that freedom which let the five medallions settle into their alternating rhythm rather than the single fixed medallion this design more often carries.

At home

A rug of this size sits well under a dining table for six, or anchors a seating group in a living room. The petrol ground holds its own against dark wood or dark upholstery and warms a pale floor rather than fighting it, while the terracotta border keeps the piece grounded beneath a laid table or a scattering of furniture. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, already twenty to forty years into a working life that shows only as a soft, even patina, and it takes daily use without complaint. Sit with it through an afternoon, and it is the marching sequence of the medallions, terracotta to ivory and back, that keeps drawing the eye across the room.
