About This Azerbaijan
Where it comes from
A Heriz-style rug from Azerbaijan province in the northwest of Iran, 295 x 196 cm (9'8" x 6'5"). The province holds seven separate weaving districts, and its rugs share a visual language rooted in northwest Persian and Caucasian tradition: bold geometric medallions, angular arabesque borders and deep, saturated grounds. This piece carries that medallion tradition, but drawn with a crispness and restraint you do not always find in it.
What you see
The field is a warm terracotta, scattered with small angular floral sprays, and across it sits a stepped diamond medallion in navy and blue. Look closer and the medallion is built in layers: an outer navy lattice, then a paler octagon inside it, and at the centre a small rosette, so the shape reads almost as a jewel set into the field rather than a flat emblem. A wide ivory border carries a dark-blue vine-and-blossom meander, held between narrow navy and rust guard stripes, and together the border takes up close to a fifth of the width.
How it was made
That precision has a practical explanation. The knot count here runs to 201,000-250,000 per square metre, dense enough to hold the medallion's stepped edges sharp rather than letting them blur into the field, which is exactly the crispness that sets this piece apart. The pile is hand-spun wool, kept to a low 8mm over a cotton warp, and it is this low, tight construction that gives the surface its slightly flat, even finish and its light natural sheen, rather than the deeper pile some other Persian weavings carry.
At home
At close to three metres by two, this rug is built for a dining table or a living room seating group, somewhere it can be seen whole. The rust ground has enough warmth to lift a pale floor and enough depth to hold its own against dark wood or leather furniture nearby. Underfoot it is dense and firm rather than soft and deep, a weave that takes daily use rather than asking to be spared it. Under changing light, the navy medallion is what keeps catching the eye, holding its crisp edge whatever the hour.
