About This Azerbaijan

Where it comes from

This is an Azerbaijan rug, hand-knotted in the northwest of Iran, a province with seven distinct weaving districts—Tabriz among them—recorded since the thirteenth century. Its rugs are known above all for bold geometric medallions on deep, saturated grounds. This piece measures 257 x 190 cm (8'5" x 6'3"), and where the type usually holds to one commanding medallion, here there are eight.

What you see

The field is a deep night-blue, almost black in places, with eight diamond medallions arranged in three staggered rows, their centres alternating between brick red and blue. Small geometric filler motifs in dusty rose, cream, camel and muted blue scatter between them, each lightly outlined in black. The staggering breaks any single repeat, giving the layout a checkerboard energy instead. A wide ivory border carries a repeating cross-and-diamond pattern, held between a narrower red band and a darker one, in crisp contrast to the field.

How it was made

The wool is hand-spun, knotted onto a cotton warp at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre—dense enough to keep the diamonds' points sharp rather than blurred, which gives the medallions their crisp edges despite the matte hand-spun surface. The pile stays low, at 8 mm, so the geometry reads clearly rather than sinking into depth. Local wool is worked in water said to run copper-rich, credited with its durability, and this rug, twenty to forty years old, carries a firm structure.

At home

This rug suits a living room, laid before a sofa or under a low table. The night-blue ground holds its own against dark furniture and warms a pale floor, while the medallions keep the eye moving without ever feeling busy. Underfoot the pile is short, dense and firm, built for daily use. As light crosses it, the red and blue centres catch differently, keeping the pattern alive.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 257 × 190 cm (4.88 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 4.88 m² that is roughly 1.0 to 1.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
