About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, knotted at 89 x 75 cm (2'11" x 2'6"). The type is known for bold, angular geometry and a deep palette of reds and indigo, carried by hand-spun wool that gives even a small piece real presence. Baluch weavers usually crowd every inch of the field; this one does not.

What you see

The field is left open, a pale ivory ground giving the pattern room to breathe. At its centre, a navy lozenge medallion is filled edge to edge with a red hooked, serrated pattern, sharp against the cream. Small sprigs of stylised flowers and vases drift across the field, touched with green, mustard and lilac, never enough to crowd it. A wide navy border carries rows of angular red and cream stars, closing the design with the same firm geometry as the medallion.

How it was made

This openness comes from the hand that made it. A Baluch is knotted from memory on a portable loom, usually by one weaver without a drawn plan, so how much field to leave bare is her choice. The wool is hand-spun, uneven in thickness, so the surface takes light as a soft matte instead of a sheen. At around 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the density favours bold, firm shapes over fine detail, letting the hooked red medallion read cleanly against the open ground.

At home

A rug this size suits a single spot — a study corner, beside a bed, or inside a front door. The ivory field lifts a dark corner; the navy and red medallion holds its own against wood or leather nearby. Underfoot the hand-spun wool is dense and slightly springy, sturdy enough for daily use. As light crosses it, the scattered green, mustard and lilac sprigs catch in turn.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 89 × 75 cm (0.67 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 0.67 m² that is roughly 130,000 to 170,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
