About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch runner, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, 172 x 82 cm (5'8" x 2'8"). Known for bold, angular geometry and a deep, earthy palette of rich red and indigo, knotted from memory rather than a drawn plan, this piece is built around three medallions rather than the single centrepiece more usual for the type.

What you see

The field is a deep indigo, almost navy, and down its length run three diamond medallions, linked like beads on a chain rather than standing alone. Each is dense with floral rosettes, serrated leaves and small tribal filler motifs in brick red, terracotta and cream, with touches of olive and rust. In each corner an ivory cartouche carries a small, stylised red figure, more emblem than illustration. A broad brick-red border, filled with a tight diamond lattice, closes the runner on both long sides.

How it was made

This runner was knotted on a portable loom, from memory, over many months, with no drawn plan to follow. The wool is hand-spun before dyeing, so its thickness varies slightly along the yarn, giving the reds and indigo a soft unevenness rather than a flat, printed colour. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the density keeps the three medallions distinct, and the six-millimetre pile gives the surface its weight underfoot.

At home

This is a runner for a hallway, a landing, or beside a bed, made to be walked past rather than sat on. The indigo ground holds its own against dark woodwork, and the brick red and cream lift a space with little daylight. Underfoot it is dense and matte, the hand-spun wool giving a firm, walkable surface. Along its length the three medallions read as a sequence, giving the runner a quiet rhythm.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 172 × 82 cm (1.41 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 1.41 m² that is roughly 180,000 to 230,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
