About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, made by nomadic and semi-nomadic families rather than in any workshop. The type is known for bold, angular geometry and deep, earthy colour, red and indigo above all, often set within a prayer-niche layout. This particular piece measures 199 x 102 cm (6'6" x 3'4"), and it carries no such niche.

What you see

The first impression is a field of tightly packed dark brown diamonds, each centred with a small ivory rosette, across a deep brick red ground. There is no medallion to rest the eye on; the trellis simply repeats, corner to corner, without a break. A wide red border closes the field, carrying dark hooked diagonal motifs, edged on both sides by narrow ivory zigzag guard stripes, taking up close to a fifth of the rug's width.

How it was made

Hand-knotted from memory on a portable loom, the rug has a cotton warp and a pile of hand-spun wool, its yarn slightly uneven and so faintly textured rather than machine-smooth. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the density holds the small diamonds and rosettes in clean order without slowing the weaver's rhythm. The red sits a shade lighter at the centre than at the edges, the kind of shift that comes when wool from more than one dye batch entered the same piece.

At home

This size suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed, seen up close rather than across a room. The brick red and dark brown hold their own against a dark floor and warm a pale one. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, made for daily use rather than for best. Morning light picks out the ivory rosettes one by one before it reaches the red around them.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 199 × 102 cm (2.03 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 2.03 m² that is roughly 260,000 to 320,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
