About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 170 x 90 cm (5'7" x 2'11"). Baluch rugs are knotted from memory rather than a plan, known for deep, earthy colour — reds and indigo above all — and for bold, angular geometry passed from one generation of weavers to the next.

What you see

The ground is a near-black indigo, and against it one large pointed diamond medallion holds the eye. Look closer and it resolves into a dense lattice of small rosettes, red and ivory, close enough to read as one bold form only from across the room. In the ivory corner spandrels, camels appear as a quiet recurring figure. A wide brick-red border encloses the field, carrying its own narrow bands of cream-and-black zigzags and diamonds, held firmly apart from the dark ground within.

How it was made

This rug is hand-knotted on a cotton warp, with a pile of handspun wool — yarn that varies slightly from thread to thread and takes light without any sheen, so the surface reads as matte and textured rather than polished. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, there was enough resolution to draw each small rosette clearly, though the weaver worked from memory on a portable loom, so the rosettes and camels repeat with the small variations of a hand rather than a machine.

At home

This rug suits a hallway or landing, walked past rather than sat on, often short of daylight. Brick red and deep indigo hold their own there, warming a dim passage without needing sun. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, built for a nomadic life and happy to be walked on daily. Passed each morning, its small rosettes and corner camels are what catch the eye.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 170 × 90 cm (1.53 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 1.53 m² that is roughly 200,000 to 240,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
