About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, 237 x 113 cm (7'9" x 3'8"). The type is known for deep, earthy reds and indigo, bold angular geometry, and hand-spun wool. Here indigo takes the field rather than red, giving the whole piece a cooler, more nocturnal cast.

What you see

The eye meets a deep indigo ground, quiet and even. Across it march rows of arrow-shaped tree motifs in rust-orange, repeating steadily from end to end with no medallion to anchor the eye - the pattern simply continues, like trees seen from a moving cart. A red border closes the field, filled with small star-and-cross medallions set in dark compartments, finished with narrow guard stripes in sage green, ivory and burgundy that echo every accent in the field.

How it was made

The wool was spun by hand, and hand-spun yarn is never quite uniform in thickness - this, not any fault in the weaving, gives the surface its faint ribbing and matte, absorbing colour. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the weaver worked with wool thick enough to knot boldly, which is why the tree motifs read so clearly at a distance. The pile was clipped to a firm 6 millimetres, dense enough to hold its shape underfoot for years to come.

At home

A rug this narrow and long belongs in a hallway, a landing, or beside a bed, seen in passing rather than sat upon. Against a pale floor the indigo ground holds its own, and the rust-orange trees warm a corridor with little daylight. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a floor that is walked on. Catch it under a lamp at dusk and the rust motifs seem to step forward from the blue.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 237 × 113 cm (2.68 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 2.68 m² that is roughly 340,000 to 430,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
