About This Belutsch
Where it comes from
This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the border country of south-eastern Iran, sized 169 x 90 cm (5'7" x 2'11"). These are nomadic pieces, knotted from memory on a portable loom rather than from a drawn plan, and they are known for deep, earthy colour and bold, angular geometry rather than for symmetry or fine drawing. Many carry a prayer-niche design; this one does not. Instead of a single focal shape, the whole field is built from repeating diamonds, and there is no medallion at all.
What you see
The first impression is a tightly packed lattice of diamonds, red alternating with navy-blue across the entire field, each cell holding a small rust-orange or mustard rosette at its centre and outlined in dark brown-black. Nothing sits in the middle to gather the eye; the pattern carries evenly from edge to edge. A wide, deep-red border closes the field, set apart by a narrow cream guide stripe, and along it runs a row of ivory hooked ram's-horn motifs, sharp against the dark ground, flanked by several slimmer geometric guard stripes.
How it was made
A weaver working from memory, without a cartoon to follow, tends to build a design cell by cell rather than plan a centre and work outward, and that habit shows clearly here: the diamond trellis simply continues, steady and unbroken, because there was never a medallion to build towards in the first place. The wool is hand-spun before knotting, which gives the yarn a slightly uneven thickness and, in turn, the tight, matte, slightly textured surface you see rather than a glassy one. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre this is a workmanlike density, not an especially fine one, and it is exactly what lets the pattern edges stay this crisp while the wool keeps its rustic, handled character.
At home
A rug this size is made for a doorway, a study, or the floor beside a bed rather than a large open room, and it holds its own there. The red and navy read warm and grounded against pale floorboards, and stand up well against dark furniture too, so it works in either setting without needing to be matched to it. Underfoot it is dense and firm at only 6 mm of pile, built to be walked on daily rather than kept for show, and as the light shifts across the day the rust and mustard rosettes catch and settle in turn, giving the small field a life a plain ground never would.
