About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

A Baluch rug, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 192 x 112 cm (6'3" x 3'8"). Baluch weavers are known for deep, earthy colour — rich reds and indigo grounds, often carrying the mihrab shape of a prayer niche. This piece sits apart from that expectation: its ground is ivory, not the dark red or blue the type is usually built on.

What you see

The field reads pale and open at first glance, scattered with small leaping animal figures and floral sprigs that sit lightly against the cream ground rather than pressing into it. At the centre, a bold sunburst medallion radiates outward, its lines sharp and geometric against the softer scatter around it. A multi-band border in brick red, navy and mustard closes the piece, and against the ivory field those colours read stronger than they would on a darker ground, holding the eye at the edge as much as the medallion does at the centre.

How it was made

The pile is handspun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre — a fine count for a piece worked from memory on a portable loom rather than from a drawn plan, which is also why the animal figures scatter rather than repeat in a grid. Handspun wool varies slightly in thickness thread to thread, and here it has been sheared close, to about 6 mm, giving a surface that is smooth and even with a slight sheen, so the irregularity lives in the drawing rather than underfoot.

At home

At this size the rug suits a bedroom, laid beside the bed or under a small reading chair, or a hallway that gets little daylight. The ivory ground will lift either space rather than sit heavy in it, and the reds, navy and mustard stay warm against pale floors without darkening the room. Underfoot it is dense and firm, a wool worth walking on rather than setting aside, and the scattered figures reward a second look each time the light shifts across them.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 192 × 112 cm (2.15 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 2.15 m² that is roughly 430,000 to 540,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
