About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal rug from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 190 x 111 cm (6'3" x 3'8"). Baluch weavings are known for deep, earthy colour and bold geometric pattern, often built around a prayer-niche shape. Here the weaver has set that same vocabulary into a tight, disciplined grid.

What you see

The ground is a chocolate brown so dark it reads almost as black, and across it sits a close, even grid of red octagonal guls. Each gul carries a small rectangle of rust orange at its centre, a quiet second beat inside the larger repeat. Fine ivory diamonds link the guls together, holding the field taut. Around all of this runs a broad border in brick red, filled with navy latch-hook diagonals and closed by a thin ivory floral guard stripe.

How it was made

The wool is hand-spun, the pile knotted by hand onto a cotton warp, at a density of 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, worked from memory rather than from a drawn plan. That a nomadic weaver held such a regular grid across the whole field is the achievement; the small variations from one rust-orange rectangle to the next are what mark it as a hand, not a machine. At six millimetres the pile stays dense and close, with a slight sheen across the red.

At home

At 190 x 111 cm this suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed. Against a pale floor the brick red and rust warm the space; in a dim hallway it holds its own without daylight. The dense wool sits firm underfoot, made to be walked on rather than kept for best. Low light catches the sheen on each gul, and the rust squares glow in turn.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 190 × 111 cm (2.11 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 2.11 m² that is roughly 270,000 to 340,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
