Where it comes from
This is a Baluch runner, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 288 x 78 cm (9'5" x 2'7"). Baluch rugs, also written Belouch, are woven by nomadic and semi-settled tribes across this region, valued for bold geometric pattern, deep earthy colour, and mihrab-shaped prayer layouts drawn from memory rather than from any fixed plan.
What you see
The field runs sand-beige, carrying a fine diagonal lattice of small serrated ticks in red, indigo, olive and dusty pink. At its exact centre a single octagonal medallion breaks the lattice, a quiet pause in an otherwise continuous rhythm. A narrow band of dark serrated triangles frames the field, set within a wider red border of small geometric motifs. At each end that red opens into a broad panel, and within each panel two octagonal medallions stack one above the other, closing the runner like a pair of bookends.
How it was made
The pile is handspun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp, the wool carrying the slight thickness and uneven twist of hand spinning rather than machine yarn. That is what gives the surface its matt, slightly ribbed texture, most visible along the diagonal ticking. Twenty to forty years on the loom and in use show in a weave that is tight and precise yet never mechanically even. Woven from memory rather than a cartoon, the maker balanced the two end panels by eye alone, arriving at that bookend symmetry through practised judgement rather than measurement.

A runner of this length and width belongs in a hallway or along a landing, where the eye travels its length rather than settling on one spot. The sand ground lifts a hallway with little daylight, while the red end panels hold the eye like two deliberate pauses. Underfoot the weave is tight and low, dense enough for daily footsteps to cross it. Morning light along the lattice picks out the dusty pink and olive flecks one at a time.
