About This Semnan

Where it comes from

A Semnan rug from the ancient city of that name on Persia's old Silk Road trading routes, measuring 212 x 137 cm (6'11" x 4'6"). Semnan weaving sits between city workshop and village hand, drawn with more precision than a nomadic piece but with a freedom no workshop cartoon usually allows, and it has been known in the trade since the late nineteenth century for exactly this balance. What sets this one apart within that tradition is scale: where the type is normally built from a dense, almost cluttered repeat, here the boteh has been drawn large and spaced well apart.

What you see

The field is a warm cream, and across it the paisley motifs march in a steady, even rhythm, each one large enough to read on its own rather than dissolving into a crowd. Between them, small floral rosettes fill the ground without competing for attention, and there is no medallion to anchor the eye to a centre. A wide border in deep red closes the composition firmly, its scrolling floral guard stripes holding the pale field the way a frame holds a drawing. The contrast between that dark border and the ivory ground is strong, but the spacing within the field keeps the whole piece calm rather than busy.

How it was made

That calm comes directly from the way it was knotted. The pile is wool blended with silk over a cotton foundation, tied by hand in the asymmetrical Persian knot at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, a fineness that lets each paisley keep a crisp, drawn outline rather than blurring at the edge. The silk in the mix is what gives the surface its light sheen, and at a pile height of only 10 mm the motifs sit close and sharp against the ground instead of softening into shadow, which is exactly what lets a large, widely spaced pattern like this stay graphic instead of looking sparse.

At home

A rug this size suits a living room or study, laid under a seating group or a desk chair rather than a full dining table, and the cream field will lift a room with darker floorboards or furniture rather than disappearing into them. Underfoot it is dense, firm and smooth, built for a room that gets used rather than one that is kept for show. As daylight moves across it through the day, the slight sheen in the silk catches along the paisley outlines, and it is that quiet play of light on a pattern with room to breathe that you keep coming back to.

Semnan rugs originate from the city of Semnan in Semnan Province, east of Tehran in central Iran. These are urban-style Persian carpets, knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot on cotton foundations, they feature finely executed compositions with a clean, composed aesthetic and dense, even knotting.

Central medallion designs predominate, rendered in a palette of classic reds and blues with attractive colour selections. The high-quality hand-spun wool and neat, consistent knotting produce a refined surface suited for formal and everyday spaces alike.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 212 × 137 cm (2.90 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 2.90 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
