Khorasan rugs come from the vast weaving region of northeastern Iran, encompassing Razavi, North, and South Khorasan provinces, with Mashhad as the main trade centre. Knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot on cotton foundations, they are known for curvilinear floral designs, Herati patterns, and a distinctive palette of deep crimson reds and indigo blues.
Many Khorasan pieces feature thick, plush pile and often large formats suited for generous living spaces. The classic palette balances strong reds with substantial blues, creating a deep, atmospheric warmth. High-quality local wool, sometimes with silk highlights, produces a soft, resilient surface.
Measuring 239 × 196 cm, with an area of 4.68 m², crafted from Hand-spun Wool, Hand-knotted, this piece is a testament to masterful craftsmanship. The knot density of 201,000 – 250,000 / m² speaks to the extraordinary care woven into every inch.
Preserved in perfect condition, spacious, grand, and deeply atmospheric, khorasan rugs are made for rooms that deserve presence.
Fine quality weave
At 239 × 196 cm (4.68 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.
Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 4.68 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.
Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
