About This Khosro-Abad

Where it comes from

Khosro-Abad rugs come from village looms in Persia, where the weaving sits between workshop discipline and nomadic freedom, and the pattern is drawn from memory rather than from a fixed cartoon. This piece measures 247 x 169 cm (8'1" x 5'6"), the classic size for a rug that will sit under a small table or define a seating area. What the type is known for is exactly what is in front of you: an honest, geometric hand, and wool spun by hand so that the surface carries a natural sheen rather than a uniform machine gloss.

What you see

The field is a deep navy, broken by a lattice of diamonds, and no two compartments repeat. One holds a small rosette, the next a star, another a floral spray, each in its own mix of rust, cream, dusty blue, olive and ochre gold, so the eye keeps moving rather than settling into a single unit. Around this, a wide ivory border carries a panelled sequence of crosses and medallions in red and blue, held between a plain brick-red outer band and narrow dotted guards, the whole border running to roughly a fifth of the rug's width and standing off the dark field with real clarity.

How it was made

That variety, cell to cell, is a mark of village weaving done freehand: no cartoon was followed twice, so the weaver's own sense of the garden pattern comes through in each compartment. The wool itself is hand-spun, which means the fibre is thicker and less even than machine-spun yarn, and it is exactly that unevenness that catches the light and gives the pile its soft, matte lustre rather than a flat shine. At a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, worked over a cotton warp, the detail stays crisp without the rug losing the loose, personal character that a stricter workshop weave would iron out.

At home

In a dining room this rug sits happily under a table and a run of chairs, and the navy field holds its own against dark wood while the rust and gold notes warm a pale floor underneath. Underfoot the 12 mm wool pile is dense and firm, built for daily footsteps rather than careful preservation. As the light shifts through the day, the hand-spun wool catches it unevenly across the field, and it is easy to keep finding a compartment you had not quite looked at before.

Khosro-Abad rugs are village-style pieces from western Iran, celebrating the charm of small-town weaving: honest geometry, traditional ornament, and a distinctly handmade character. Constructed on cotton foundations with the symmetrical (Turkish) knot in the regional Hamadan tradition.

Strong, hand-spun wool gives the surface a natural lustre and robust everyday durability. Geometric patterns and Herati motifs are rendered in warm reds and blues with authentic craft character, practical rugs that feel genuine rather than overly formal.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 247 × 169 cm (4.17 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 4.17 m² that is roughly 1.3 to 1.6 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
