About This Khorasan
Where it comes from
This is a Khorasan Sherkat, a workshop-organised weaving from the Khorasan region of north-eastern Persia, measuring 244 x 198 cm (8'0" x 6'6"). Unlike the freehand work of a single village loom, Khorasan Sherkat pieces are produced under cooperative direction, which is why the type is known for large, evenly balanced medallion designs carried out to a consistent standard. That consistency is exactly what defines this particular rug.
What you see
An open ivory field carries a scalloped navy medallion with a rust-red core, held squarely at the centre rather than crowded by its surroundings. Around it, small floral sprays and vine scrolls scatter evenly across the pale ground, dense enough to hold the eye without disturbing the medallion's clarity. Tan corner spandrels close each corner, giving the field a quiet four-part order rather than one continuous ground. A wide navy border, worked in the same floral vocabulary and edged with a rust-red guard stripe, frames the whole firmly.
How it was made
This balance is built into the making. The rug is hand-knotted on a cotton warp, with hand-spun wool for the pile, at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre — a fine enough count to keep the small floral motifs crisp rather than blurred, and even across the whole field, which is the point of a workshop-coordinated weaving. Hand-spun wool takes dye with slight variation from strand to strand, so even a closely clipped, 12 mm pile carries a faint depth of tone rather than one flat colour.
At home
A rug this size settles well into a living room, laid under a seating group rather than against a wall. The ivory field lifts a room with pale flooring and holds its ground against dark furniture, while the navy border keeps the eye contained rather than let loose. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, closely clipped rather than deep, built for daily use rather than display. As the afternoon light moves across it, the hand-spun wool catches faintly, warming the tan spandrels and deepening the navy, without ever disturbing the calm of the drawing.
