About This Rafsanjan

Where it comes from

This is a Rafsanjan, a floral rug from the wider Kerman weaving region of Iran, measuring 338 x 244 cm (11'1" x 8'0"). Rafsanjan shares the Kerman family's fondness for elegant floral drawing and generous scale, though its own hand is somewhat quieter than the parent style, favouring balance over display.

What you see

The first impression is a deep navy field carried edge to edge in fine floral scrollwork, drawn in the Mahi tradition and repeated without a break. Salmon-pink and cream sprays alternate with olive leaves and ivory vinework, the mirrored lattice folding in on itself as it nears the centre until the vines gather into a soft rosette, felt rather than announced. A wide brick-red border encloses the field, filled with palmettes and running vine, framed by narrower stripes of dusty blue-grey and cream.

How it was made

The rug is hand-knotted, wool pile hand-spun and set on a cotton warp, at a density between 501,000 and 640,000 knots per square metre — months at the loom, from the Sherkat Farsh workshop. Hand-spun wool takes a finer, less even thread than machine yarn, and it is this that lets the vinework run continuously across the field without breaking into blocks. The same fineness keeps the central rosette soft, the knots small enough for the pattern to merge rather than resolve into a hard outline.

At home

This is a dining room or living room rug, sized for a table or a seating group rather than a corner. The navy holds its own against dark wood and pale floors alike, and the brick-red border keeps the room warm rather than cool. Underfoot the pile is dense and firmly clipped, a rug made for daily use rather than display, and the wool carries a light sheen that catches the rosette differently as the day's light moves across it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 338 × 244 cm (8.25 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre; across 8.25 m² that is roughly 4.1 to 5.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
