About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori-Pars rug, also written Luri, a tribal weaving from the Zagros mountains of southwestern Iran, measuring 232 x 168 cm (7'7" x 5'6"). Lori weavers work from memory rather than from a drawn plan, and their rugs are known for confident colour and bold, simplified geometry. This piece takes that same confidence and turns it toward near silence.

What you see

The first impression is a warm camel ground, and within it a single large square in a lighter ivory-beige, set slightly off any strict centre, floating rather than fixed. There is no drawn medallion and no motif in the ordinary sense, only this one soft block of tone against another. Around the outer fifth of the field, the camel continues but is overlaid with a faint, fine-line grid, barely darker than the ground itself, giving the outer zone something of the weight of a border without ever quite becoming one.

How it was made

The wool is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, and hand-spinning never comes out perfectly even: slight variations in thickness catch the light differently along the strand, giving the surface its quiet vertical striping. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, this density suits bold, simplified drawing rather than fine detail, and at 11 millimetres the pile sits low and flat, keeping square and ground on one plane.

At home

This size suits a seating area or a bedroom, and the camel ground warms a pale floor without needing a busy room around it. Underfoot the hand-spun pile is dense and firm rather than deep, made for daily use rather than for show. Light moving across it shifts the ground from gold to sand, and the pale square at its centre keeps its own quiet light.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 232 × 168 cm (3.90 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 3.90 m² that is roughly 780,000 to 970,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
