About This Blour Baft
Where it comes from
A village weaving from the Bakhtiari region of Persia, 186 x 139 cm (6'1" x 4'7"), knotted to the standard traded as Blour Baft — the finest grade within the Bakhtiari tradition, where a village hand takes on the floral vocabulary usually associated with the great city rugs of Kerman. It is known for exactly that combination: the drawing of a workshop piece, carried by the sturdier build of a tribal loom.
What you see
The field is a deep midnight navy, and across it sit four large teardrop-shaped pendants, two in cream and two crowned in dark red, set in strict mirror symmetry around a slender central spine of flowering vine. It reads less as a busy floral repeat than as a deliberate emblem, spacious where the type is usually dense, the eye resting on the four shapes before it finds the smaller red, green and cream florets scattered between them. A wide brick-red border of continuous floral vine closes the composition, held in by narrower cream and blue-grey guard stripes that keep the red from overwhelming the navy within.
How it was made
That clarity comes from the way the piece is built. It sits on a natural wool foundation rather than the pure cotton of a city workshop, which gives it a firmer, more forgiving structure — a rug meant for a floor rather than a wall. The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, a density fine enough to hold the pendants' outline crisply without chasing the extreme fineness of a Kerman, and left at 12mm it has real depth to the hand. This is the balance the Blour Baft name describes: refinement enough for the drawing to stay legible, robustness enough to be walked on for decades.

At 186 x 139 cm it sits comfortably in front of a sofa, at the foot of a bed, or anywhere a room needs one settled, graphic object rather than a field of pattern. The navy holds its own against dark wood or a busy room beyond it, while the cream pendants lift a pale floor without competing for attention. Underfoot the wool is dense and slightly springy, built for daily use rather than careful protection. As light moves across it through the day, the matte wool takes the sun differently along the pile, and the red border keeps warming while the navy stays deep and still.
"Bolourbaft" is a quality designation in the Persian rug trade, not a geographic provenance, the name means "crystal weave" in Farsi (bolour = crystal, baft = weave). It indicates the finest, most refined knotting quality available from a given production centre, typically associated with premium hand-spun wool and exceptional finishing.
