About This Blour Baft
Where it comes from
This is a Blour Baft, the finest grade within the Bakhtiari weaving tradition of west-central Iran, made at village level but drawn and knotted with a precision usually associated with city workshops. Measuring 235 x 174 cm (7'9" x 5'9"), it is sized for a room rather than a hallway, and it carries the floral vocabulary long associated with Kerman design, worked here into a rug built to be lived on rather than kept behind glass.
What you see
The field is a deep, settled navy, and across it runs a dense, symmetrical Mahi lattice, diamonds interlocking with rosettes and serrated leaf forms in brick red and cream, spread evenly with no medallion to break the repeat. The border, taking up close to a fifth of the rug, frames this field in several bands: a rust-red main stripe carrying floral cartouches, a gold-tan minor line, and between them a slate-green guard stripe whose cool, almost grey cast cuts unexpectedly through all that warm red and gold. It is this band that gives the whole piece its architectural feel, as though the warmer pattern were held inside a quieter, deliberately cooler frame.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted onto a wool foundation, and spun by hand rather than machine it takes dye a little unevenly, which is why the surface reads as matte and soft-edged rather than sharp or glossy, even where the drawing itself is crisp. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the density is high enough to hold the fine cartouches and the double-framed border clearly in place, work that in a village weaving of this kind represents a serious stretch of time at the loom. Wool on a wool foundation is also simply sturdy, which is the other half of what Blour Baft is known for: a gallery-level drawing built on a construction meant for daily footfall rather than careful preservation.
At home
A rug this size sits well in a living room seating group or under the furniture of a bedroom, and the navy field will hold its own against dark wood or a dark sofa while still warming a pale floor considerably. Underfoot it is dense and firm rather than plush, at ten millimetres of pile it has body without being deep, and it is built to take the ordinary traffic of a room used every day. Where daylight crosses it, the rust red and cream lift out of the navy and the cool green line settles quietly between them, and that quiet, deliberate contrast is the thing you keep noticing long after the first look.
"Bolourbaft" is a quality designation in the Persian rug trade, not a geographic provenance, the name means "crystal weave" in Farsi (bolour = crystal, baft = weave). It indicates the finest, most refined knotting quality available from a given production centre, typically associated with premium hand-spun wool and exceptional finishing.
