About This Dorokhsh

Dorokhsh rugs come from the small town of Dorokhsh in the hills of South Khorasan Province, eastern Iran, the name means "luster" in Persian, reflecting the subtle surface glow these pieces are known for. Knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot on cotton or wool foundations, they represent the refined end of Khorasan weaving.

All-over boteh (paisley) repeats and tree-of-life compositions are among the most characteristic designs, rendered in understated crimson, beige, and dark blue with secondary tones of pistachio and olive. The refined colour palette and elegant drawing make Dorokhsh pieces exceptionally decorator-friendly. The master weaver has signed this piece, a mark of exceptional quality and pride in their craft.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 312 × 216 cm (6.74 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 6.74 m² that is roughly 3.0 to 3.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
