About This Dorokhsh
Where it comes from
This is a Dorokhsh, a Persian medallion rug from the Khorasan region of eastern Iran, closely related to the Moud weavings of a neighbouring village and often traded under either name. It measures 292 x 197 cm (9'7" x 6'6"). The type is known for elegant, refined drawing and a subtle surface polish, and here that polish sits over an unusually soft, restrained palette.
What you see
The first impression is cream and olive rather than the deep red or blue ground Dorokhsh rugs usually favour. A dense Mahi lattice covers the field edge to edge, its fine diamond trellis repeating without a break. At the centre a large scalloped medallion rises, its outer points shading from cream through soft olive into a deep navy and brick-red core, so it appears to glow from within. Matching spandrels echo the shape in each corner, and a broad brick-red border of palmettes and vinework closes the design between narrow cream and light-blue guard stripes.
How it was made
That softness comes as much from materials as from drawing. The pile is wool with a silk admixture, and silk spins finer than wool, so wherever it is used the knot draws tighter and the outline sharpens without thickening. At 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, the fine lattice holds its geometry across the whole field rather than blurring at a distance. A pile clipped to just 12 mm keeps the surface flat and even, giving the light sheen that lets the medallion's shading read as gradation rather than blocks of colour. The rug is signed, a mark of pride in work this fine.
At home
A rug this size suits a living or dining room, under a table or in front of a sofa group. Against a pale floor the cream field warms the room without competing for attention, and the brick-red medallion holds its own near dark wood or dark upholstery. Underfoot the pile feels firm, fine and smooth, dense enough to be walked on rather than kept for best. Where daylight reaches it, the surface catches the light as it moves, and the medallion seems to shift from soft olive into a deeper red through the day.
