What the number actually controls
Think of a knot as a pixel. Each one can hold one colour, and the pattern is built out of them. The more knots per square metre, the smaller each one is, and the finer the shape that can be drawn without visible steps at its edges.
That is the whole mechanism. A curved leaf with a tapering tip needs many small knots along its outline, or the curve turns into a staircase. A stepped diamond needs far fewer, because its edges are already straight lines.
This is why origins with geometric traditions weave coarse and origins with floral traditions weave fine — and why it is a mistake to read the second as better. The Heriz weaver at 90,000 knots and the Isfahan weaver at a million are solving different problems, and each has chosen the density their design language requires.
Where the number stops mattering
Between a coarse rug and a medium one the difference is obvious at arm’s length: contours sharpen, small motifs become legible. Between a fine rug and a very fine one it is visible only up close, and only if you are looking for it.
Above roughly 600,000 knots per square metre the returns flatten. The drawing was already sharp; what you are buying is the extra months of labour that the last increment cost, and the price reflects that more than the appearance does.
What does not flatten is the effect of everything else. A rug at 250,000 knots in good handspun wool with natural dyes will outlive and outlook a rug at 600,000 in poor wool. If you have to choose where to spend, wool quality beats knot count.

Raj, La and how to convert
Two regional counts appear on labels and mean the same thing measured differently. Raj, used around Tabriz, counts knots across seven centimetres of width — 40 Raj, 50 Raj, 60 Raj. La, used around Nain, counts the threads twisted into each warp: 9La is coarser than 6La, because more threads make a thicker warp and fewer knots fit.
Neither converts exactly to knots per square metre, because both depend on the density of rows as well as columns. As a working guide, 40 Raj sits around 250,000 knots, 50 Raj around 400,000, and 60 Raj above 600,000.
The point of knowing this is not precision. It is that a rug described only as "50 Raj" or "6La" is telling you about its resolution, and you can place it against the ranges above rather than treating the term as a grade.
How to check it yourself
Turn the rug over and pick a spot away from the border. Count the knots along ten centimetres horizontally and ten centimetres vertically. Multiply the two, then by one hundred: that is your knots per square metre.
Count on the back rather than the front. On the pile side the knots are hidden by the wool; on the back each one shows as a small node in a regular grid.
Do it twice, in two different places. An even count in both is itself a quality signal, because it means the loom tension held over the months the rug took.
Common questions
Is a higher knot density always better?
No. It is a measure of resolution, not quality. A geometric tribal design reads perfectly at 128,000 knots and would gain nothing from four times as many; a curved floral design needs the density or the curves turn into steps. Wool and dye quality decide whether a rug is good.
How do I count knots at home?
Turn the rug over, pick a spot away from the border, count the knots across ten centimetres and down ten centimetres, multiply the two and then by one hundred. Count on the back, where each knot shows as a node; on the front the pile hides them.
What is 50 Raj?

Because it is built as a sitting and sleeping surface, where substance matters more than drawing. At around 90,000 knots with 18 mm of pile it does that job better than any fine rug could — the fineness would come at the cost of exactly the thickness that is the point.
