About This Sarough

Where it comes from

This is a Sarough, also written Sarouk, a classic Persian floral rug from the Arak region of west-central Iran, measuring 188 x 129 cm (6'2" x 4'3"). Sarough rugs are best known for their dense floral drawing set against a warm, unmistakable Persian red ground. This particular piece keeps the drawing but abandons the red, set instead on a deep navy field.

What you see

The first impression is a dark, richly worked ground carrying a warm rust-orange medallion at its centre. Two smaller medallions flank it, so the eye reads a chain of three rather than one isolated form. A fine floral vine spreads across the navy field, broken at each corner by cream cartouche shapes. Sage green leaves, dusty rose and burgundy sprays, and soft blue-grey touches thread through the scrollwork. A wide cream floral border encloses the field, with a narrower brick-red band inside it, holding the composition firmly in place.

How it was made

The wool is handspun rather than machine-spun, so the fibre keeps small irregularities that catch the light unevenly, giving the medallion its soft sheen. At a knot density of 501,000 to 640,000 per square metre, the weaver could draw the scrollwork with a precision coarser knotting cannot hold, each petal outlined cleanly. A pile height of 12 mm keeps the surface dense and slightly raised, so the medallion sits just proud of the field.

At home

This size suits a bedroom or a quiet reading corner, laid beside the bed or in front of a chair. The navy ground settles a pale floor and holds its own against dark furniture, while the rust-orange medallion keeps the room warm. Underfoot it is dense and firm, suited to a calm room rather than a busy hallway. As daylight moves across it, the medallion catches the light unevenly, never quite the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 188 × 129 cm (2.43 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre; across 2.43 m² that is roughly 1.2 to 1.6 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
