About This Sarough

Where it comes from

This is a Sarouk, also written Saruk, from the Arak region of west-central Persia, 361 x 246 cm (11'10" x 8'1"). Sarouks are known above all for their deep, glowing "Persian red" grounds and dense floral medallion designs, and for a firmness of knot that lets an elegant, controlled drawing carry real richness without ever looking heavy or fussy.

What you see

The field opens in a vivid, saturated red, over which a sharply drawn navy lozenge medallion sits with long pendants reaching toward the field's ends. Dense floral scrollwork covers the ground almost edge to edge, in cream, ochre and rose. The four corners are filled not in matching navy but in a distinct steel blue, a quiet two-tone touch that sets them slightly apart from the centre. A wide navy border carries a repeating run of palmettes and closes the design firmly.

How it was made

The pile is handspun wool, hand-knotted onto a cotton foundation at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, with a pile height of 12 millimetres. That density is what keeps the medallion's edges so clean and the floral scroll even across the field, down to the change from navy to steel blue in the corners. Hand-spun wool also gives the surface its soft, matte character rather than any sheen. At twenty to forty years old, the rug has shown how well that firm structure wears.

At home

A rug this size suits a dining room or a living room, sized for a table or a sofa group. The red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor equally well. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, made for daily use rather than careful preservation. As light moves across it, the steel blue corners shift against the navy medallion.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 361 × 246 cm (8.88 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 8.88 m² that is roughly 1.8 to 2.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
