About This Sarough
Where it comes from
A Sarough rests on a long tradition of Persian floral weaving, and the type is loved above all for one thing: a deep, warm red ground that has become known simply as classic Persian red. This piece, 257 x 210 cm (8'5" x 6'11"), takes the drawing that made Sarough famous and sets it on a different ground altogether — a rug from the same family, but not the colour you expect from it.
What you see
The field is a dark navy, almost black, and across it cream floral sprays are set in a diamond lattice, dense and even from edge to edge. At the centre sits a floral medallion with pendant palmettes in ivory, and the same medallion is echoed in miniature at each corner of the field, a device long associated with Kashan work. The red the type is known for has not vanished; it has moved outward, filling a wide border of cream floral vines, held in check by narrow ivory and navy guard stripes. Against the navy ground, that border reads less like decoration and more like a frame holding a darker, quieter picture in place.
How it was made
The drawing owes its precision to a firm knot: 201,000 to 250,000 per square metre, tied by hand over a cotton warp. That density is what lets the lattice and the medallion stay sharp and symmetrical rather than blurring into one another, even across a field this densely patterned. The pile itself is hand-spun wool, twelve millimetres deep, with a soft matte hand and a light sheen rather than a shine — the surface a genuinely new rug should have, with no distortion and no wear yet asked of it.
At home
A rug this size and this composed belongs in a formal room — under a dining table, or anchoring a seating group in a living room. The navy ground holds its own against dark wood or leather furniture, while the brick-red border keeps the whole piece warm rather than sombre, and will lift a room with pale floors without shouting. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for a room that sees regular use rather than one kept for best. Catch it in low evening light and the slight sheen in the wool brings the cream lattice forward, so the medallion at its centre seems to sit just above the rest of the field.
