Where it comes from
This is a Sarough, 241 x 196 cm (7'11" x 6'5"). The type comes from the Arak region of west-central Iran and is known above all for a controlled, elegant floral drawing knotted firmly enough to stay crisp for generations, traditionally set against a deep, almost burgundy red. This particular piece keeps that discipline of pattern but sets it on ivory instead, which changes the whole character of the rug before you have even read the motifs.
What you see
The field opens luminous and pale, and only as the eye settles does the density of the pattern become apparent: fine navy and rust floral sprays scattered across the whole ground, radiating outward with no single point of emphasis. A small medallion sits at the centre, understated rather than commanding, so the effect reads more as a garden in full growth than as a medallion rug with a frame. A wide rust-orange border, its florals picked out in dark navy, closes the piece firmly and gives the pale field something solid to push against.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, knotted by hand at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. Hand-spun yarn is never perfectly uniform, and that slight irregularity is what gives each floral spray its faint variation in depth of colour rather than a flat, printed evenness. At 12 millimetres the pile is generously thick, which is what lets the drawing stay this fine and controlled without the wool ever looking thin or sparse underfoot.

At just over two by two and a half metres, this rug is sized for a dining table or a seating group in a living room, and its ivory ground is the reason to choose it over the more usual red: it lifts a room with pale floors instead of darkening it, and it holds its own comfortably against dark wood furniture without ever competing for attention. Underfoot it is dense, firm and thick enough for daily use, made to be walked on rather than kept for best.
