About This Sarough

Where it comes from

This is a Sarough runner, also spelled Sarouk, 250 x 67 cm (8'2" x 2'2"), from the Arak region of west-central Iran, home of a weaving tradition prized for dense floral drawing set against the deep red ground collectors call Persian red. Here the same close, disciplined pattern has been set into navy instead, a departure from the colour the type is best known for.

What you see

The field reads first as a deep, even navy, calm rather than assertive. Down its length run four diamond-shaped floral medallions, one after another rather than a single medallion at the centre, so the eye moves along the runner instead of settling on one point. Around each diamond sit bouquets of rust-orange and salmon-pink blossom, among sage-green leaves and touches of dusty blue. A wide ivory border, filled with the same scrollwork, closes the field on both sides.

How it was made

This runner is hand-knotted on a cotton warp, with a pile of hand-spun wool, at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. Hand-spun wool takes dye a little unevenly, which is why the navy carries a soft matte depth and light sheen rather than one flat colour. That density let the weaver draw each medallion and its bouquets with real precision, close enough to hold fine floral detail without the piece becoming fragile. At twelve millimetres, the pile feels dense and cushioned underfoot.

At home

A runner this size suits a hallway or landing, made to be walked on rather than admired from a doorway. Against pale flooring the navy holds its own, and the ivory border lifts a space that gets little daylight. The pile is firm and dense underfoot, built for a passage in daily use. Walk its length and the four medallions carry the eye forward, rust and pink glowing quietly against the dark.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 250 × 67 cm (1.68 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 1.68 m² that is roughly 340,000 to 420,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
