About This Sarough
Where it comes from
This is a Sarough, also written Sarouk, a floral-medallion rug from the Persian weaving heritage centred on Arak in western Iran. At 129 x 69 cm (4'3" x 2'3") it is a small, compact piece. The type is usually known for a dense, deep red ground and firm, disciplined knotting; here the ground is ivory, a quieter reading of the same tradition.
What you see
The eye meets a cream field first, calm rather than crowded. Across it runs fine scrollwork in brick and dark red, threaded with navy accents and touches of sage green, laid out in careful mirror symmetry above and below a single small rosette medallion at the centre. Black picks out the rosette and returns again in the border. A broad dark blue main border, carrying the same floral rhythm, is framed by several narrow red-and-cream guard stripes, the whole surround taking up about a fifth of the width.
How it was made
The pile is handspun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp at a density of 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, enough to carry the fine drawing of each flower and leaf without crowding the ground around it. Handspun yarn keeps a slight, natural irregularity that a machine-spun thread does not, which is part of why the surface has a soft, faintly uneven life under the light rather than a printed flatness. At 12 mm the pile stays low and even, smooth and lightly lustrous underhand, and it is this restraint that lets the scrollwork read clearly instead of dissolving into pattern.
At home
At this size the rug wants somewhere small and seen up close, a hallway, a landing, beside a bed, or in front of a study desk. The ivory ground lifts a dim hallway or a pale floor, and the red and navy hold their own against darker furniture nearby. Underfoot it is dense and firm, well suited to a spot with everyday footfall rather than one kept for best. Catch it in low afternoon light and the faint sheen brings the red scrollwork forward off the cream, the small medallion quietly holding the centre.
